Should you sit NET-1 or wait for a later series?

Sit NET-1 if you can register by 14 November 2026 and have studied most of the Part-1 syllabus. NUST counts only your best score, so an early attempt costs Rs 5,000 and a day, not merit. Wait for a later series only if NET-1 would take study time away from a weak FSc result, or if you can only test in Karachi, Gilgit or Quetta.

The rest of this post is the decision itself: how ready you need to be, what each choice costs, and where your board exams fall.

Key facts

  • NET-2027 Series-1: registration 4 Oct to 14 Nov 2026, CBNET in Islamabad from 17 Nov 2026 (tentative)
  • "In case of multiple attempts of NET the best test score will be considered for merit generation"
  • One attempt per series for a particular discipline
  • Rs 5,000 per exam, non-refundable, valid only for the series paid for
  • NET results are valid for the current admission cycle only
  • NET is based on SSC and HSSC Part-1 and Part-II studies

How the best-score rule changes the question

NUST states the rule in three places. The salient features page: "In case of multiple attempts of NET the best test score will be considered for merit generation." The procedure page: "Best score will be picked by the system for merit generation." The portal: "in any one series only one attempt is allowed for a particular discipline."

So NET-1 is not a gamble with your merit. A bad score is ignored if a later one is higher. The real question is narrower: is a Series-1 attempt worth Rs 5,000, a trip to Islamabad, and the study days around it?

The rules on attempts and fees are covered in how many times you can take NET. Using the gap after an attempt is covered in retaking NET. This post is only about the timing call.

Readiness: a two-paper test

You have about three weeks before Series-1 registration closes. Use them to measure, not guess.

  1. Sit one full-length paper this week, on the real 180-minute clock.
  2. Study for a week, then sit a second.
  3. Compare both scores with the NET score your target needs. The score post shows how to work that out from your marks.

Then read the result:

Your mock resultsWhat to do
Within about 15 marks of your target, and risingRegister for Series-1. A real attempt now may already be close to usable
More than 15 marks short, mostly from Part-2 chapters you haven't studiedRegister anyway if you can afford it, as a rehearsal. Expect the score to rise in a later series
Far short across Part-1 chapters tooSkip Series-1. Spend the time on content and aim for Series-2

The 15-mark line is our judgement, not a NUST rule. Most students gain marks between attempts from pacing alone, so a score within reach on the first sitting is worth putting on record.

Why NET-1 is harder for FSc students

NUST's FAQ says NET is "primarily based on SSC / HSSC level studies (Part-1 & Part-II)". In November, most FSc Part-2 students are only partway through the second-year books. On NET-Engineering, the second-year maths book includes integration, analytical geometry and conic sections, so a Series-1 sitter meets questions from chapters they haven't been taught yet.

That doesn't make Series-1 pointless. It means a Series-1 score will usually understate what you can score in June. Gap-year and repeater students don't have this problem. Their syllabus is done and they have no board exams, so for them Series-1 is often the best series of the cycle.

The board exam clash

Your FSc result matters twice. It is 15% of merit, and you need 60% in the full result to join NUST at all. The low FSc post works out what each lost percent costs.

NUST lists Series-3 for April 2027 and Series-4 from June to July 2027. Board dates vary by board and year. As one example, news reports of BISE Lahore's 2026 date sheet put Intermediate Part-II written papers from 20 May to 12 June 2026. In that year:

  • Series-3 tests ran 4 April to 2 May 2026, in the weeks just before those papers.
  • Series-4 tests began 13 June 2026, the day after they ended.

So Series-3 competes with your final board preparation, and Series-4 starts right after it. That is why an early score from Series-1 or Series-2 matters: it lets you give March to May to your board exams without worrying about NET. Check your own board's date sheet before you pick.

Cost per attempt

Each attempt is Rs 5,000 for Pakistani and dual-nationality candidates (Rs 10,000 for foreign nationals). NUST's fee page says the fee is "neither refundable nor transferable" and valid only for the series it was paid for. Miss your session and the fee is gone.

For Series-1, add travel. It is held only in Islamabad, only as a computer-based test. A student from Lahore or Peshawar pays for the trip on top of the fee. Price that in before you decide, and compare it with a free home paper on the CBNET simulator, which teaches the interface but not the nerves.

When waiting is the right call

  • You test in Karachi or Gilgit. PBNET is only in Series-2 (Karachi) and Series-4 (Karachi and Gilgit). Quetta's CBNET is only in Series-2 and Series-4.
  • Your Part-1 result is close to 60%. Your FSc is the bigger risk, so protect your study time.
  • You haven't started. A score of 90 tells you less than two weeks of chapter work would.

A default plan

If none of the cases above fits you, our default is to sit Series-1 or Series-2 early, then Series-4 after board exams. That gives you one score on record before boards and one at full syllabus. Check the current windows on the NET dates page. The NET 2027 dates post has the full schedule, and how many mocks to take covers the weeks before each attempt.

FAQ

Is it worth taking NET-1 if I'm not fully prepared?

Often yes, because NUST counts only your best score. A weak Series-1 costs the Rs 5,000 fee and the trip, not your merit. Skip it only if the study time would hurt your FSc result.

Does NUST take my best NET score or my latest?

The best. NUST's salient features page says the best test score is considered for merit generation when you take NET more than once.

Is NET-1 harder than later series?

NUST doesn't publish difficulty by series. It is harder for FSc students in practice, because NET covers Part-II and most haven't finished it by November.

Can I take NET-1 in Lahore or Karachi?

No. NUST lists Series-1 as a computer-based test in Islamabad only. Karachi's paper-based test is in Series-2 and Series-4.

Which NET series clashes with FSc board exams?

Usually Series-3 (April) falls just before Part-II papers and Series-4 starts right after them. Check your own board's date sheet, as dates differ by board and year.
