NUST eligibility criteria: marks, streams and which paper you sit

SailToNUSTCreator of the site

Contents8 sections

To be eligible for NUST you need at least 60% in SSC (Matric or O-Level equivalence) and at least 60% in HSSC (FSc or A-Level equivalence), plus the right subjects for the programme. You can register for NET on your FSc Part-1 result. The 60% HSSC condition is checked when you join, not when you apply.

Key facts

  • Minimum 60% each in SSC and HSSC, or IBCC equivalent
  • FSc students apply on Part-1 marks
  • O/A-Level students apply on O-Level IBCC equivalence
  • All non-FSc qualifications need an IBCC equivalence certificate
  • No age limit, and no penalty for gap years or repeaters

The 60% rule, read carefully

NUST's eligibility page asks for a minimum of 60% aggregate marks each in SSC and HSSC, or equivalent exams as per IBCC equivalence. The ineligibility page lists the reverse: less than 60% in SSC and HSSC, or a failed or missed subject in HSSC Part-I or Part-II, makes you ineligible.

Timing matters here. The FAQ asks: is a candidate with less than 60% in FSc Part-1 eligible to apply? NUST's answer is yes. Your Part-1 marks go into the merit calculation, but when you join NUST you must have 60% or more in the complete FSc result.

So 58% in Part-1 does not stop you registering. It does mean your Part-2 has to pull the total up, and a lower Part-1 already costs you on merit, since HSSC is 15% of the aggregate.

SSC is different. The salient features page says all candidates must have 60% in SSC to register. There is no catching up on Matric.

Streams NUST recognises

NUST defines three standard HSSC streams on its weightings page:

StreamSubjects
Pre-EngineeringMathematics, Physics, Chemistry
Pre-MedicalBiology, Physics, Chemistry
ICSMathematics, Physics, Computer Science

Anything else, such as Pre-Medical with Additional Mathematics or an FA, gets matched to programmes on NUST's academic qualification page.

Which programmes each background can apply for

This is the programme-wise table from NUST's merit criteria page, simplified. It tells you which paper counts for which programme.

LLB also needs a valid HEC Law Admission Test (LAT) score of at least 50%. BS Accounting & Finance needs Mathematics, Accounting & Finance, or Accountancy as a mandatory HSSC subject. BS Robotics & Artificial Intelligence is new from Fall 2027, according to NUST's updates page.

Conditions for non-standard combinations

Three routes come with strings attached. Read these before you register.

ICS to Engineering. You can apply to all NUST engineering programmes, but you must clear Chemistry as a remedial course in your first semester. NUST cites PEC regulation for this.

Pre-Medical to Engineering (no Additional Maths). You sit NET-Engineering, and you must clear NUST's condensed 8-week online Mathematics course before admission. The updates page says NET-2027 applicants must finish it before 25 July 2027 with at least 60% marks to enter the Fall 2027 merit.

Pre-Medical to Computing (no Additional Maths). You sit NET-Engineering and must clear 6 credit hours of deficient Mathematics courses within one year of enrolling.

If you are a Pre-Medical student thinking about switching, the Pre-Medical and ICS guide covers the trade-offs.

O-Level and A-Level students

NUST applies the same 60% floor through IBCC equivalence. You need an IBCC equivalence certificate for O-Level to apply, and for A-Level to confirm admission. Submitting your grade sheets alone does not count. The FAQ is explicit about that.

If you are still in your A-Level final year, you apply on your O-Level equivalence. In that case the merit formula gives your O-Level equivalence 25% weight instead of the usual 10% for SSC plus 15% for HSSC. You then provide your A-Level equivalence certificate within 15 days of your result, or at admission.

Enter the marks exactly as printed on your IBCC certificate. NUST's selection page warns that self-calculated marks affect your merit position and can lead to cancellation. The A-Level students guide has the rest.

Who cannot get in this session

From NUST's ineligibility and selection pages:

  • Less than 60% in SSC or HSSC, or in O/A-Level as per IBCC equivalence.
  • A failed or missed HSSC subject.
  • O/A-Level candidates without a valid IBCC O-Level equivalence when applying.
  • Anyone sitting a board's second annual exam, or the October/November O/A-Level session, in the admission year.
  • Anyone expelled from NUST on disciplinary grounds.

The second-annual rule surprises people. If you plan to improve your FSc marks in the supplementary exam, you cannot join that year's intake.

Check your aggregate with your marks

Being eligible is not the same as getting in

Meeting the 60% floor only lets you compete. Your place on the merit list depends on the aggregate: NET 75%, HSSC 15%, SSC 10%. Run your numbers through the calculator, then read what NET score you need for your target programme.

FAQ

Can I apply to NUST with 59% in FSc Part 1?

Yes. NUST's FAQ says Part-1 marks below 60% can still be used to apply. You must have 60% or more in the complete FSc result when you join.

Can ICS students apply for engineering at NUST?

Yes. ICS students can apply to all engineering programmes but must clear Chemistry as a remedial course in the first semester.

Can pre-medical students apply for computer science at NUST?

Yes. They sit NET-Engineering and, without Additional Maths, must clear 6 credit hours of Mathematics within a year of enrolling.

Is there an age limit for NUST undergraduate admission?

No. NUST's FAQ says there is no age limit, and gap-year or repeater candidates are treated as normal candidates with no penalty.

Do A-Level students need IBCC equivalence for NUST?

Yes. All non-FSc candidates need an IBCC equivalence certificate. Grade sheets on their own are not accepted.
