Pre-medical students can apply to NUST for engineering, computing, applied sciences and business programmes, and ICS students can apply for engineering and computing. Both groups come with conditions. Pre-medical students without additional maths must pass extra maths courses, and ICS students in engineering must pass chemistry in their first semester.
Key facts
- Pre-medical and ICS candidates applying for Engineering or Computing sit NET-Engineering
- Pre-medical without additional maths, Engineering or BS Robotics and AI: pass NUST's 8-week condensed maths course before admission
- Pre-medical without additional maths, Computing: clear 6 credit hours of maths within one year
- ICS in Engineering: clear Chemistry as a remedial course in the 1st semester
- Pre-medical with additional maths can apply for all programmes

How NUST defines the groups
NUST's weightings page defines three standard streams. Pre-Engineering is Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Pre-Medical is Biology, Physics and Chemistry. ICS is Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science. Everything below uses these definitions. If your combination is different, for example pre-medical with additional maths, check your exact row on NUST's academic qualification page.
Programmes open to pre-medical students
This comes from NUST's programme-wise merit table and its academic qualification page.
| Programme | Open to pre-medical? | NET paper | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering | Yes | NET-Engineering | Without additional maths: pass NUST's 8-week condensed maths course before admission |
| Computing (BS CS, SE, AI, Data Science) | Yes | NET-Engineering | Without additional maths: clear 6 credit hours of deficient maths within one year |
| BS Robotics and AI | Yes | NET-Engineering | Same 8-week course rule as Engineering |
| BS Biotechnology, Environmental Science, Agriculture | Yes | NET-Applied Sciences | None |
| BS Food Science and Technology | Yes | NET-Applied Sciences or NET-Engineering | Best score counts even if you sit both |
| BS Bioinformatics | Yes | NET-Applied Sciences or NET-Engineering | Best score counts even if you sit both. NUST groups it with Computing for the 6-credit-hour maths rule |
| BS Chemistry, BS Physics | Yes | NET-Applied Sciences or NET-Engineering | None listed |
| BBA, Economics, Psychology, Mass Communication and other business and social sciences | Yes | NET-Business Studies and Social Sciences | BS Accounting and Finance needs maths or accounting |
| BS Mathematics | No | Needs maths as a subject | |
| B Architecture, B Industrial Design | No | Needs maths and physics |
The 8-week maths course for engineering
This is the condition most pre-medical students miss. NUST built it to meet a 2024 PEC regulation (PEC/EAD/49-GB/004/2024, dated 11 July 2024).
- It is an online, self-paced mathematics course of 8 weeks, run on NUST's connected.nust.edu.pk platform.
- It applies to FSc pre-medical students who did not take additional maths and are applying for Engineering programmes. The eligibility page applies the same rule to BS Robotics and AI.
- NET-2027 applicants must finish it before 25 July 2027 and score at least 60% to enter the merit for Fall 2027.
- You still sit NET-Engineering, which is 50% mathematics.
That last point matters more than the course. NET-Engineering weights Mathematics at 50%, Physics 30% and English 20%. That is a derived 100 maths MCQs at the 200-question total. As a pre-medical student, half of your paper is a subject you did not take in FSc. The 8-week course will not make up for that. Real preparation will.
Start with the NET maths guide and the maths practice chapters, and give yourself months, not weeks.
Programmes open to ICS students
| Programme | Open to ICS? | NET paper | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering | Yes | NET-Engineering | Clear Chemistry as a remedial course in the 1st semester |
| Computing | Yes | NET-Engineering | None |
| BS Robotics and AI | Yes | NET-Engineering | None |
| BS Mathematics, BS Physics | Yes | NET-Engineering | None |
| B Architecture, B Industrial Design | Yes | NET-Architecture | None |
| Business and social sciences, including Accounting and Finance | Yes | NET-Business Studies and Social Sciences | None |
| BS Biotechnology, Environmental Science, Agriculture | No | Need pre-medical | |
| BS Chemistry, BS Food Science | No | Need chemistry or a pre-engineering/pre-medical group |
ICS students have the easier deal for engineering. NET-Engineering tests Mathematics, Physics and English, and you studied the first two. NUST's FAQ cites PEC regulation PEC/EAD/46-VCCM/Regulations/2023 of 30 March 2023, which makes ICS students eligible for all of NUST's engineering programmes. The only extra is the first-semester chemistry course.
Which NET paper to sit
For most students in these groups the choice is simple.
- ICS, aiming for Engineering or Computing: NET-Engineering.
- Pre-medical, aiming for Biotechnology, Environmental Science or Agriculture: NET-Applied Sciences, which is 50% Biology, 30% Chemistry and 20% English.
- Pre-medical, aiming for Engineering or Computing: NET-Engineering, and a serious maths plan.
- Pre-medical, unsure: BS Bioinformatics, BS Food Science, BS Chemistry and BS Physics accept either NET-Applied Sciences or NET-Engineering. For Bioinformatics, Food Science and Chemistry, NUST takes your best score even if you sit both papers.
NUST allows one attempt per discipline in a series, and each series needs its own registration and fee. A pre-medical student who wants both doors open can sit NET-Applied Sciences in one series and NET-Engineering in another. Which NET paper should you take covers this in more detail.
The eligibility floor still applies
None of these routes changes the basics. You need at least 60% in SSC and HSSC. Your aggregate is still NET 75%, HSSC 15%, SSC 10%. The eligibility post covers the rest.
