NUST vs UET Lahore: NET vs ECAT, merit formulas and seats

SailToNUSTCreator of the site

Contents7 sections

NUST ranks engineering applicants 75% on NET. UET Lahore ranks them 33% on ECAT and 50% on FSc Part-I marks. So a student with strong board marks and an average test can be ahead at UET and behind at NUST, and the reverse is just as common.

This post compares the two on things both universities publish: the tests, the merit formulas, who can apply for which seats, and the calendar.

Key facts

  • NUST merit: NET 75%, HSSC 15%, SSC 10%
  • UET merit for ECAT programmes: ECAT 33%, FSc Part-I 50%, matric 17%
  • NET: 200 MCQs, 180 minutes. ECAT: 100 MCQs, 100 minutes, 400 marks
  • Neither test has negative marking
  • UET open merit seats are for Punjab (including ICT) domicile only, unless a programme says otherwise
  • Both let you test more than once in a cycle and count your best score

The biggest content difference is Chemistry. NET-Engineering doesn't test it. ECAT gives it 30 of 100 questions for Pre-Engineering students. If NUST is your main target, ECAT means re-opening a subject you may have shelved.

NET's 100/60/40 question split is derived from NUST's published percentages. NUST doesn't publish counts. ECAT's counts come straight from UET's FAQ.

The NET vs ECAT post goes deeper on the papers, including UET's published score averages.

How each merit formula works

NUST = NET% x 0.75  + HSSC% x 0.15       + SSC% x 0.10
UET  = ECAT% x 0.33 + FSc Part-I% x 0.50 + matric% x 0.17

UET uses your Part-I result even if you have already finished FSc. NUST uses Part-I out of 550 if that is all you have, or the full result out of 1100.

Two applicants show what the weights do:

Applicant A: matric 90%, Part-I 88%, test 55%
  NUST = 41.25 + 13.20 + 9.00  = 63.45
  UET  = 18.15 + 44.00 + 15.30 = 77.45

Applicant B: matric 75%, Part-I 72%, test 75%
  NUST = 56.25 + 10.80 + 7.50  = 74.55
  UET  = 24.75 + 36.00 + 12.75 = 73.50

At NUST, B leads A by about 11 points. At UET, A leads B by about 4. Each university ranks you only against its own applicants, so don't compare a NUST total with a UET total. Compare where you stand within each.

The weights also tell you where an extra hour of study pays off. At NUST, raising your test score by 10 percentage points adds 7.5 aggregate points. At UET the same jump adds 3.3. If you are still in first year, your Part-I exam is worth half your UET aggregate. Treat it that way.

Try your own numbers in the aggregate calculator. The merit formula post covers NUST's side in detail.

Who can apply for which seats

UET Lahore fills its open merit seats with Punjab-domiciled applicants, ICT included, unless a programme says otherwise. UET's FAQ lists programmes offered on an all-Pakistan basis: Geological Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Mining Engineering, Textile Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, City and Regional Planning, and Product and Industrial Design. If your domicile is outside Punjab and ICT, check the category list before you pay.

UET needs at least 60% in Intermediate for engineering and architecture, and 50% for science, technology and business programmes. Your merit aggregate must also be at least 50%. Your ECAT subject combination must match your Intermediate subjects, because UET considers you only for disciplines that fit that combination. DAE holders are the exception.

NUST has no domicile condition on its NET merit. It needs 60% in SSC and in HSSC. It also offers limited ACT/SAT seats, covered in the ACT/SAT post.

Campuses and programmes

UET admits to five campuses: Main Campus Lahore, Faisalabad, Narowal, RCET Gujranwala and the new Kala Shah Kaku campus. The Lahore list has 29 ECAT programmes. They range from Civil, Electrical and Mechanical to Mining, Petroleum and Gas, and Polymer Engineering. Computing degrees such as CS, AI, Data Science and Software Engineering need ECAT too. UET also runs 14 non-ECAT programmes in Lahore, mostly sciences and business.

ECAT scores also feed admissions elsewhere in Punjab. UET lists partner institutes including BZU Multan, Islamia University Bahawalpur, UET Taxila, University of Gujrat, NFC IET Multan and KFUEIT Rahim Yar Khan. One test can count for several applications, but each institute runs its own admission process.

NUST's schools are spread across several cities, and its NET covers engineering, computing, sciences, business and architecture through five papers. The campuses post has the map.

The calendar

UET's Fall 2026 cycle:

  • ECAT 2026 (Second): registration until 13 June 2026, tests 16 to 21 June 2026, result 30 June 2026
  • UET undergraduate applications: 8 June to 15 July 2026
  • Program preference changes: 12 to 14 July 2026, for Rs 1,500

UET's prospectus accepted either the first or the second ECAT of 2026. NET-2026 Series-4 started on 13 June 2026 in Islamabad, three days before the second ECAT. A student chasing both scores in June is splitting one month between two papers.

The fix is the same one we give everywhere: sit NET early. NUST's tentative NET-2027 schedule opens Series-1 registration from 4 October to 14 November 2026. With a NET score in hand by spring, June becomes ECAT month and your Chemistry gets the time it needs.

Which one suits you

The formulas decide most of this for you:

  • Board marks above your test level? UET's 67% weight on matric and Part-I favours you.
  • Test score above your board marks? NUST's 75% on NET favours you.
  • Domicile outside Punjab and ICT? UET open merit is mostly closed to you. NUST isn't.
  • Weak Chemistry? It costs you 30 ECAT questions and no NET marks.

Most Punjab students should apply to both. Mathematics and Physics overlap almost completely, so one plan covers most of both papers. The one-plan post shows how to schedule it.

FAQ

Is ECAT easier than NET?

ECAT is shorter at 100 questions in 100 minutes, and NET is 200 in 180. ECAT adds Chemistry. Neither has negative marking. The NET vs ECAT post compares them in detail.

Does UET Lahore use FSc Part-II marks for merit?

No. UET's prospectus uses First Year percentage marks for the 50% component, even if you have already completed Intermediate.

Can students from KP or Sindh get into UET Lahore?

Open merit seats need a Punjab or ICT domicile unless a programme says otherwise. UET lists a few all-Pakistan programmes, such as Mining and Biomedical Engineering.

Can I take ECAT twice?

Yes. UET says it allows multiple attempts in line with PEC instructions and counts your best score. NET works the same way across its four series.
