NET-Engineering is 200 MCQs in 180 minutes on Mathematics, Physics and English. ECAT is 100 MCQs in 100 minutes and adds Chemistry for Pre-Engineering students. Neither has negative marking. NET is 75% of NUST's merit. ECAT is 33% of UET Lahore's.
If you are sitting both, those numbers tell you where your hours should go.

Format side by side
| NET-Engineering | ECAT | |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 200 | 100 |
| Time | 180 minutes | 100 minutes |
| Seconds per question | 54 | 60 |
| Total marks | 200 | 400 |
| Marks per correct answer | 1 | 4 |
| Negative marking | No | No |
| Re-checking | Paper-based NET: within 5 days, Rs 500 | None, the test is fully automated |
The per-question time is close: 54 seconds on NET, 60 on ECAT. The stamina demand isn't. NET runs 180 minutes on one clock, and ECAT ends at 100. Students who finish ECAT comfortably can still fade in NET's last hour. If you have only practised in 100-minute blocks, sit at least two full NET-length papers before your series.
NET comes in two modes. It is computer-based (CBNET) in Islamabad and Quetta, and paper-based (PBNET) in Karachi and Gilgit. The CBNET vs PBNET post covers the difference. UET describes ECAT as fully automated with no re-checking, and its FAQ links a mock test video. ECAT has no passing threshold, and UET bans calculators in the hall.
Syllabus: what overlaps and what doesn't
| Subject | NET-Engineering | ECAT, Pre-Engineering combination |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 50% (derived: about 100 questions) | 30 questions |
| Physics | 30% (derived: about 60 questions) | 30 questions |
| Chemistry | none | 30 questions |
| English | 20% (derived: about 40 questions) | 10 questions, comprehension only |
NUST publishes NET's weights as percentages, not counts. The question counts above are derived from the 200-question total. ECAT's counts are UET's own.
Three differences matter for planning.
Chemistry. NET-Engineering dropped it. ECAT gives it 30% of the paper. A NUST-first student who stopped revising Chemistry after FSc has a third of ECAT to rebuild.
Mathematics weight. Maths is half of NET and under a third of ECAT. A strong maths student gains more from NET's weighting.
English. ECAT's English is 10 comprehension questions based on a passage. NET's English is 20% of the paper and covers vocabulary, grammar and usage. Reading comprehension alone won't cover NET's English. See the English practice set.
ECAT also comes in other combinations. ICS students take Computer Science instead of Chemistry. Pre-Medical students take Biology instead of Mathematics. There are Statistics options for General Science students too. DAE holders can only pick Physics, Mathematics, English with Chemistry or with Computer Science. UET considers you only for disciplines that match the combination you took.
Difficulty in numbers
UET publishes score statistics for each ECAT. For ECAT Fall 2026 (First):
| Group | Highest | Average |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-Engineering | 396 | 203 |
| ICS (Physics) | 388 | 201 |
| Pre-Medical | 384 | 222 |
So the average Pre-Engineering candidate scored about 51% on ECAT. With 4 marks per question and no penalty, 203 means roughly 51 correct answers out of 100.
NUST doesn't publish NET averages, so we can't give you the same figure for NET. Anyone quoting a "NET average" is guessing. What we can compare is pace and length. NET asks you to sustain 54 seconds a question for twice as many questions.
On weight, ECAT matters less per mark than NET. Ten percentage points on ECAT move your UET aggregate by 3.3 points. Ten on NET move your NUST aggregate by 7.5. At UET, FSc Part-I carries 50% and matric 17%. Your board marks do most of the work there.
Merit and attempts
NUST = NET% x 0.75 + HSSC% x 0.15 + SSC% x 0.10
UET = ECAT% x 0.33 + FSc Part-I% x 0.50 + matric% x 0.17
NET runs in four series per cycle. You can sit once per series for a discipline, and NUST counts your best score. Each series has its own Rs 5,000 fee. The attempts post covers the rules.
ECAT allows multiple attempts in line with PEC instructions, and UET counts your best score. For Fall 2026 UET ran a first and a second ECAT, and its prospectus accepted either. The ECAT fee was Rs 3,000. Miss your allotted slot and you can't retake that sitting.
ECAT scores also count beyond UET Lahore. UET's partner list includes BZU Multan, Islamia University Bahawalpur, UET Taxila, University of Gujrat, NFC IET Multan and KFUEIT Rahim Yar Khan.
Timing
In the 2026 cycle the second ECAT ran from 16 to 21 June, with results on 30 June. NET-2026 Series-4 began on 13 June in Islamabad. A student leaving both to June had one month for two different papers.
NUST's tentative NET-2027 schedule has Series-1 registration from 4 October to 14 November 2026, with computer-based tests from 17 November 2026. Sit NET in Series-1 or Series-2 and you can give ECAT its own block in spring, with Chemistry back on the timetable. The one-plan post builds the full calendar.
How to prepare for both
- Build the shared core first. FSc Mathematics and Physics cover about 80% of NET-Engineering and 60% of ECAT. Start with differentiation, integration and electrostatics.
- Add NET's English early. Vocabulary builds slowly, and ECAT's comprehension questions won't train it.
- Bring back Chemistry about eight weeks before ECAT. It is 30% of ECAT and none of NET.
- Practise both lengths. Do full 200-question papers for NET and 100-minute papers for ECAT.
FAQ
Is ECAT easier than NET?
ECAT is half the length at 100 questions in 100 minutes, and its Pre-Engineering average in the first 2026 sitting was 203 out of 400. NUST publishes no NET averages, so a direct difficulty comparison isn't possible.
Does ECAT have negative marking?
No. UET says each correct answer earns 4 marks and there is no negative marking. NET has none either.
Is chemistry in NET?
Not in NET-Engineering, which is Mathematics, Physics and English. Chemistry is 30% of NET-Applied Sciences. ECAT's Pre-Engineering paper includes 30 Chemistry questions.
How many questions are in ECAT?
100: 10 English, 30 Physics, 30 Mathematics and 30 in the third subject, Chemistry for Pre-Engineering. Time is 100 minutes and the maximum is 400 marks.
Can I prepare for NET and ECAT together?
Yes. Mathematics and Physics overlap almost completely. Add NET's English and ECAT's Chemistry as separate blocks.
