If you missed the NUST merit, you have three real moves: stay in the current selection process if you can, take NET again in the next admission cycle, or apply through ACT/SAT as well. NUST does not penalise gap-year or repeat candidates. But your old NET score does not carry over, and migrating in later is closed to anyone who missed on merit.
Key facts
- Selection runs until about the 2nd week after classes start, then closes
- Gap-year and repeat candidates face no penalty in merit generation
- A NET result is valid for the current admission cycle only
- Best score across series counts, one attempt per series per discipline
- Students who sat NET and missed on low merit cannot migrate to NUST later
- NET-2027 Series-1 registration (tentative): 4 Oct to 14 Nov 2026

First, check that you have actually missed it
The first merit list is not the final word. NUST fills seats in rounds. When selected candidates drop out or do not pay their dues, their seats go to the next people on merit. Selection usually continues until the 2nd week after classes start at H-12.
So before you give up on this year:
- Check the portal. Your merit position and selection status show up on the UG admissions portal under your registration number.
- If you were offered anything, pay on time. Only candidates who pay their dues on time stay in the process for upgradation. If you skip payment hoping for a better list, you drop out of that discipline completely.
- Look at your preferences. You can change them once during selection through NUST's Change of Preferences form, for a fee. A programme lower on your list, or one you left off, may still be within reach.
The merit list post explains how upgradation works.
Why your NET score will not carry over
NUST's salient features page says a NET result is valid for the current admission cycle only. Within a cycle, the best of your series scores counts. Once the cycle closes, your score expires. If you try again, you sit NET again in the next cycle, starting from zero.
Taking NET again next cycle
NUST runs four NET series per cycle. In any one series you get one attempt per discipline, and the best score across series is used. Each series needs its own registration and its own fee: Rs 5,000 for Pakistani and dual-nationality candidates.
NUST's tentative NET-2027 schedule, checked October 2026:
| Series | Registration | CBNET | PBNET |
|---|---|---|---|
| Series-1 | 4 Oct to 14 Nov 2026 | 17 Nov 2026 onwards (Islamabad) | none |
| Series-2 | Dec 2026 to Jan 2027 | Jan to Feb 2027 (Islamabad), Mar 2027 (Quetta) | Mar 2027 (Karachi) |
| Series-3 | Feb to Mar 2027 | Apr 2027 (Islamabad) | none |
| Series-4 | Apr to May 2027 | Jun to Jul 2027 (Islamabad), Jul 2027 (Quetta) | Jul 2027 (Karachi, Gilgit) |
NUST marks all of these as tentative. Confirm on the dates page before you register.
Gap-year and repeat candidates are, in NUST's words, treated as normal candidates with no penalty in merit generation. A year out does not reduce your aggregate.
The second attempt post covers how to study differently the second time.
Work out what you are short by
Before you plan a year, find the gap in numbers. Your aggregate is NET 75%, HSSC 15%, SSC 10%. Your school marks are mostly fixed now, so NET is the lever:
one NET mark = 0.375 aggregate points
If you were roughly 3 aggregate points short of where your target programme filled, that is 8 NET marks. If you were 10 points short, that is about 27 marks, which is a different kind of year. Ask seniors in your target programme for their aggregates to get a rough target band. NUST does not publish closing merit in a form we could find. The closing merit post explains how to estimate it.
Add the ACT/SAT route
NUST has a separate set of seats filled on ACT or SAT scores, with separate merit lists. For national seats, the ACT or SAT score takes NET's 75% weight. You can apply on both NET and ACT/SAT and be considered on both lists.
Check the subject rule before you book a test. NUST accepts SAT only for Business Studies, Social Sciences and LLB. Engineering, Computing and most science programmes need ACT scores of at least 25. The deadline for scores to reach NUST was 25 July for the 2026 intake. The ACT/SAT post has the full table.
What does not work
Migrating to NUST later. NUST's migration policy says students who appeared in NET and failed to get admission due to low merit are not eligible to migrate in. Students from universities in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and the surrounding areas are also not eligible. Do not join another university in Islamabad and plan to transfer after first year. The rules close that door.
Improving HSSC marks in a second annual exam for this year. NUST says candidates appearing in the 2nd Annual Exam of a board are not eligible for admission in the current session. An improved result can only help in a later cycle.
Rechecking a CBNET result. NUST's rechecking process covers the paper-based test only: within 5 days of the result, with a Rs 500 bank draft. It checks for unmarked answers and totalling errors.
If you take a year
A repeat year works best with a concrete plan and a hard number. Decide your target NET score from the calculation above. Sit a full paper now to find where you stand. Then plan for Series-1 or Series-2 as your first attempt, so you still have two later series if it goes badly.
Taking a seat elsewhere while you prepare is a personal call. Just do not count on migration as a backup.
FAQ
Can I reappear in NET next year?
Yes. Gap-year and repeat candidates are treated as normal candidates with no penalty. You sit NET again in the new cycle, because a NET result is valid for one admission cycle only.
Does NUST deduct marks for a gap year?
No. NUST's FAQ says there is no penalisation for gap-year or repeat candidates in merit generation.
Can I migrate to NUST after first year at another university?
Not if you sat NET and missed admission on merit. NUST's migration policy makes those students ineligible.
Is there any chance after the final merit list?
No. NUST closes selection around the 2nd week after classes start, and after that no admission is possible for that session.
